Bourbon Steak San Francisco and The Eighth Rule are set to open at the Westin St. Francis, the only hotel located directly on San Francisco’s iconic Union Square, according to a news release shared with AFROTECH™.
Bourbon Steak San Francisco offers a bold new take on award-winning chef Michael Mina’s steakhouse franchise. The Eighth Rule — Stephen Curry’s first hospitality venture — is a bourbon-forward bar developed in partnership with The MINA Group, which operates over 30 chef-driven concepts worldwide.
This will mark Mina’s return to the Westin St. Francis. In 2004, he debuted his namesake restaurant there, earning two Michelin stars and cementing his place as one of San Francisco’s most influential culinary voices.
“As my team and I have worked tirelessly to bring the evolution of Bourbon Steak back to the Westin St. Francis, I have felt a sense of overwhelming gratitude thinking about the early days when I was just cutting my teeth as a new chef in this incredible city,” Mina said in the news release. “I still pinch myself that I had the opportunity to be the young chef here in San Francisco, a city that has never lost its magic and continues to turn out the most amazing chefs and restaurants in the world.”
The menu at Bourbon Steak features an extensive selection of shellfish and caviar, alongside steaks prepared using Mina’s signature butter-poaching and wood-grilling technique to lock in moisture and flavor.
According to the news release, standout entrées include whole Dungeness Crab with fregola risotto, crab fat, and uni butter; veal scallopini with fettuccini, chanterelles, artichokes, and tomato raisins; and salt-baked sea bream with lemon caper vinaigrette.
Bourbon Steak will offer two exclusive reservations for a six-person, large-format dining experience — a seasonal, tableside presentation designed for sharing. Unique to the San Francisco location, the interactive, communal experience requires advance booking and will evolve throughout the year.
The Eighth Rule — named for the seven official rules of bourbon-making — is located directly across the lobby from Bourbon Steak. Guests are invited to define their own “eighth rule” through a dynamic menu of rare pours, craft cocktails, and inventive pairings, per the news release.
Anthony Attanasio, director of beverage for The MINA Group, leads the beverage programs at both concepts. At Bourbon Steak, each cocktail is inspired by a specific bar, year, and bartender from MINA’s history.
Steph Curry’s Next Move In Bourbon
The Eighth Rule reinforces Curry’s growing presence in the bourbon space. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the Golden State Warriors star launched Gentleman’s Cut Game Changer — a “polished and smooth” bourbon aged at least five years — in 2023.
Attanasio has crafted two distinct, yet complementary, menus at The Eighth Rule. The first is a six-course, omakase-style cocktail tasting built around Curry’s bourbon. The second features à la carte cocktails that showcase seasonal Northern California ingredients and a diverse range of spirits, from rye to mezcal.
“The goal of opening Bourbon Steak here, alongside The Eighth Rule with my friend Stephen Curry, is to continue to celebrate the grandness in a way only San Francisco can,” Mina said. “These spaces are dynamic. They’re showcasing ingredients, product, and talent in new ways. They’re designed to bring people together in a spirit of community. I am forever grateful to this city, and at this point in my career I am so blessed that I get to come back with the goal of giving something back to the place that has always been there for me.”
