After retiring from the music industry, Teyana Taylor wanted to improve the landscape for other creatives.
Retiring From Music
In 2020, the “Wake Up Love” singer and actor shocked the entertainment space when she announced her departure. In an Instagram post, she said she felt “underappreciated” and received “little to no real push from the ‘machine.'”
“I’m retiring this chapter of my story with the comfort that i can depart with peace of mind seeing that all the hard work & passion put in was indeed loved & supported somewhere in the world,” she wrote on Instagram. “To all my supporters from day 1 & all my new ones I love you and I thank you for everything & don’t worry y’all know all hustlers have the understanding that when one door closes another will open.”
The Aunties Production
The following month, Taylor expanded her all-women-led production company, The Aunties, with Coco Gilbert, who started as her dancer, Shoutout Atlanta reports. An Instagram post shared by Taylor in January 2021 states that the founders had also launched Aunties 360, a five-acre lot that offers “production, dance, recording, prop studios, equipment, and 360 green screen rooms for creatives.”
The Aunties recently handled creative direction, choreography, and styling during an appearance on Kai Cenat’s “Mafiathon 3,” a 30-day, 24/7 subathon on Twitch, which kicked off Sept. 1.
“It was like a whole 360. We do everything,” Taylor told Cenat on the stream.
Clients
Taylor said she wanted to create a safe space for creatives, which she wished had existed for her. Artists who have worked with The Aunties include Queen Naija, Usher, and Summer Walker.
“I d-mn near work with everybody. I direct for everybody… Half the industry are my clients,” Taylor admitted on Mafiathon 3. “I’m going to always be proud of my people. And I look at everyone within the industry as a community, and my job is to make creatives feel safe. I think that’s why I love everyone, because I work with so many people. So it’s like I’m just… I’m auntie.”
Taylor has also since returned to the industry, releasing her fourth studio album, “Escape Room,” in 2025, as AFROTECH™ previously told you.
