Morgan State University has received a historic donation.
Total Of $103 Million Donated To HBCU By MacKenzie Scott
According to a press release shared with AFROTECH™, the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) has received its second donation from billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. In 2020, she donated $40 million and has now circled back with a record-breaking $63 million unrestricted contribution. It is the “largest gift to Morgan in University history (individual or organizational),” according to information shared with AFROTECH™.
The announcement comes as the university has logged impressive achievements in its efforts to ensure students are on track for success, including record enrollment, new degree and certificate programs, and — as previously reported by AFROTECH™ — a $1.75 million grant to establish a medical school.
Scott’s recent donation will support more efforts to assist students, scale the university’s endowment, and grow initiatives that position it as a “Public Impact Very High Research University.” Her previous commitment supported research centers, endowed faculty positions, and strengthened the university’s endowment through the Morgan State University Foundation.
“MacKenzie Scott’s renewed investment in Morgan is a resounding testament to the work we’ve done to drive transformation, not only within our campus but throughout the communities we serve,” said David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University, in the news release.
“To receive one historic gift from Ms. Scott was an incredible honor; to receive two speaks volumes about the confidence she and her team have in our institution’s stewardship, leadership, and trajectory. This is more than philanthropy — it’s a partnership in progress,” Wilson continued.
Endia DeCordova, vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of the Morgan State University Foundation, commented:
“We are grateful for donors like MacKenzie Scott, whose groundbreaking vision through philanthropy has created sustained, generational impact at Morgan. Our thoughtful stewardship of her initial gift has strengthened Morgan’s capacity to grow our endowment and create meaningful opportunities for our students while strategically investing in the University’s future. This new transformative contribution — and her continued trust in Morgan — affirm that we are not only rising but leading, charting a bold path forward for our students and our institution.”
