Former NBA player Alonzo Mourning is paying it forward.
Mourning had a solid run in the league, playing for four teams across 16 years and racking $147.5 million in career earnings, according to Spotrac. The Chesapeake, VA, native overcame the odds. He was born to teenage parents and spent a portion of his life in foster care, including being taken in by Fannie Threet, a retired teacher who lived in a middle-class neighborhood, CBN reports. Threet fostered 49 kids in her lifetime and taught him valuable lessons that he now carries today, Mourning said on “The OGs” podcast hosted by former Miami Heat teammates Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller.
“She was a very giving person. So, she instilled all of those qualities in me through my tenure with her,” he explained.
Today, Mourning, who spent a portion of his playing career with the Miami Heat, is giving back to communities through a $37.4 million affordable housing project called Astoria on 9th in Bradenton, FL. The project was launched through a partnership between his nonprofit, AM Affordable Housing, and the Housing Trust Group, Miami Herald reports.
The five-story building has units priced between $322 and $1,316 per month and is available to rent for people at least 62 years old and who are considered to be low-income. It features a clubroom, cyber cafe with a catering kitchen and bar, fitness center, and dog park.
“Not only is it obviously business, but also we’re helping our community as well. It’s a tremendous need. There’s a shortage of 7 million affordable houses across the country,” Mourning said on the podcast. “You can’t build them fast enough.”
Housing Trust Group President and CEO Matthew A. Rieger told Miami Herald:
“As housing continues to remain a priority for many communities across Florida, Astoria on 9th will serve as another example of the immediate solutions that can be delivered for seniors in metro areas statewide. With one of the highest concentrations of elderly residents in the nation, we’re proud to deliver high-quality and readily available housing like Astoria on 9th that meets the housing and lifestyle needs seniors deserve.”
